The Soldier’s Wife (Navoda Dissanayake)

One late summer morning,

First time we met.

Fell I deep in love,

Found life in you,

Withstanding every pain, like a raging sea,

My love for thee is a strong rock.

Sweet memories I remember,

Laughing and smiling;

When thou said “I will join war”,

My heart ached,

Felt like death approached.

Nay I liked thee joining war,

My lover, me alone now:

Nay kisses sweet as sugar, nay joys,

Home a blaze, fear I gun shots.

Like a battlefield, my heart burning and burning…

Sleepless nights, thou keep earning.

Thou, a sacrificial soldier!

You say “I hast a duty to fulfil…”

“To save our country from evil.”

Counting fingers,

Day and Night…

Watch I each morning

Of thy homecoming.
